 1. What Are Genetically Modified Mosquitoes?



 Genetically modified mosquitoes (GMMs) are mosquitoes that have been altered in a lab using genetic engineering. Scientists modify their DNA to reduce their ability to spread diseases or reproduce. For example, some are designed to produce sterile offspring, which helps reduce mosquito populations over time. These modified insects are mainly used to fight diseases like dengue, malaria, and Zika

Oxitec was founded in 2002 as Oxford Insect Technologies in the United Kingdom by Luke Alphey and David Kelly, working with Oxford University's Isis Innovation technology transfer company. In August 2015, Oxitec was purchased by U.S.-based Intrexon for $160 million, and by US-based Third Security in early 2020.

Several scientific organizations and biotech companies have worked on GMMs. One of the most well-known is Oxitec, a UK-based biotech company. That makes genetic modified insect in order to improve public health and food security through insect control.

How genetics modified mosquitoes work? and what is the mechanism ?



1. Genetic Alteration in the Lab:
Scientists insert a Two types of gene into male mosquito DNA.  a lethality gene and a fluorescent marker gene. 
The lethality gene prevents female offspring from surviving to adulthood, effectively reducing the mosquito population. The fluorescent marker allows researchers to easily identify the modified mosquitoes 



2. Release into the Wild:
Only male GMMs are released into the environment. These males do not bite and are safe for humans.


3. Mating with Wild Females:
When GMM males mate with wild female mosquitoes, their offspring inherit the modified gene.


4. Population Suppression:
The offspring either die young or cannot reproduce, which causes the mosquito population to shrink over time.

What are the advantages of  GMMs 

1) . Control population of mosquitoes 
2) . Help in vanishing of diseases caring host mosquitoes 
3) . Easy to identify the GMMs
